This was a really cool place to step back in time. We arrived at a good time— lots of stools open. I had a double hand burger, my husband had the cheesy western, we both had chili, and my daughter had two hotdogs. For the cost, this place was worth it! Not a ton of flavor but definitely good for what it is. Definitely a cool place to go to when you’re in Roanoke or passing through.

HISTORY ALERT!!!! 👀 Tavern has been a Roanoke landmark since 1930, when Isaac “Nick” Bullington opened its doors and introduced the city to his San Antonio–inspired chili. Four generations later, the Bullington family still runs this tiny, ten‑stool diner with the same pride, grit, and sense of tradition that made it a local institution. The menu remains famously simple — chili, burgers, dogs, and the iconic Cheesy Western — all cooked on a grill that feels like it’s been sizzling nonstop for nearly a century.During my visit, I ordered two chili dogs, and they were exactly what Texas Tavern is known for: snappy, satisfying, and covered in that rich, nostalgic chili that tastes like Roanoke history in a bun. The atmosphere is pure Americana — stainless steel, quick service, and a steady stream of regulars who treat the place like a second home.A highlight of the experience was meeting the current owner, who greeted us with genuine warmth and shared a bit about the Tavern’s legacy. That personal connection made the meal feel even more special, like being welcomed into a long‑standing Roanoke tradition.Five stars — for authenticity, history, and chili dogs that deliver every time.

I just moved back to Virginia after spending the last two years down in Paris, Texas, and let me tell you—stopping at Texas Tavern felt like coming home in the best way possible. I’m actually in the middle of relocating to Lynchburg, so I figured I’d grab a quick bite, and I’m real glad I did. I walked in thinking I’d just tap my phone and keep it moving, not realizing they’re cash only. When I got up to the register and found that out, I was a little stuck for a second. I asked the man working up front about it, and he kept it real simple—cash only. No attitude, just straight up. But here’s where it turned into something special. A few moments later, he came back over and offered me some food on the house. Didn’t have to do that at all. While that was happening, another customer nearby overheard the situation and handed me $10 just so I could get myself something to eat. Man… that right there is the kind of kindness you don’t forget. Good people, good energy, and that small-town hospitality that just hits different. The food was great, but honestly, it was the people that made the whole experience. If you’re anywhere near Roanoke, do yourself a favor and stop by Texas Tavern.

What a great historic place to get some great food. Simple menu, chili, hot dogs and hamburgers. The staff is absolutely perfect for the place and are helpful. 10 stools at the counter make for a great dining experience. Fun place - stop in and see them!

A real old fashioned experience that can’t be missed if you’re in the downtown Roanoke area. Everything is under $5. Large cheeseburger was delicious. .Chili dogs looked promising and breakfast is also served. Cash only, and only 10 barstools so be ready for it! It’s awesome! 🍔 🌭
